I've got a year old lab mix that we picked up from a shelter a few months back. He's a great dog, but he's got one problem. He tends to freak out when we leave for a while and can get a bit destructive. Does anyone have any tips that you may have used on your own pet that help with this sort of problem? I'd appreciate it.

Sounds like a lab. They are great dogs once they get past that first 1-1.5yr.

1. Don't make a big fuss when you get home. Wait til the dog calms down before you greet him.

2. If (1) doesn't work, get him a muzzle. A friend of mine has had success with this after his lab ate 2 square feet of drywall.

3. Keep the dog in a kennel/crate when you aren't home. My dog tends to do better if he's in a crate when we go outside as opposed to him being left to roam the house. It's like he feels safer that way.

Yep. Number 3. This is what I've done for all mine until they get a little older.
