You will not find much better than the info shared right here on TnDeer.

I learned almost everything about deer hunting on this website.

Come to think of it, I should get a good book or two as well. \:D

Best books I have read on scouting are the Eberhart series. Precision Bowhunting probably has the most detailed info on actual scouting. Even if you are not a bow hunter, you will find the info very applicable and very specific and realistic in interpretation of sign. You will also feel like an underachiever....

http://deerjohn.net/pages/books.html

Most of the books were written by Chris Eberhart, though much of the tactics were developed over the years by his father, John. John E was hunting mature bucks with a bow before there was the concept of "mature buck hunting." His sons grew up with game officers sleeping outside of their house and following them around to their hunting spots because everyone was convinced that they were shooting deer at night with a rifle because it was deemed impossible to kill such bucks consistently, especially with a bow.

Mapping Trophy Whitetails by Brad Herndon is the best I have read.

Greg Miller has written some good books as well.

Do what I do, don't scout. I have a book or 2 of Greg Millers books. As far as I am concerned his books do not apply to hunting in Tennessee.

Outside of the winter months, I tend to agree with that.

Ok so you just hunt the lay of the land or you just go get in any tree.

2X on the Eberhart's books, Greg Miller's books, and Brad Herndon's Mapping Trophy Bucks. I've read 'em all and they helped me a lot. It's hard to find Greg's books new. I had to search around online and buy them used.

If I have never hunted a place, I will make a quick trip. Mainly look for what are obvious to me places to hunt. Especially mast trees and edges. Then I will hunt various stands and adjust to the deer. Most of my places I have hunted for a long time. On public land I pick a place on maps, google earth, satellite pics, etc. and get as far away as I can from roads and WALK and look for the same things. Have had great success doing this. 99 percent of my scouting is on my walk in to hunt a stand and or my way back out.
