Pain does fade from memory for sure, every time we backpack in crazy weather we say we will never do it again (Im talking being wet and cold for 3 days straight in the mountains) then a few weeks later we are back at it.

The spot we are mule deer hunting this fall has a canyon separating our hunt area, the canyon is almost 800' deep and has 3 "steps" that you climb to get out. Hopefully we can kill the deer on our side of the canyon but if not I am going across it. Its a 2 hour climb out with a light pack, so I have no idea how long packing a deer out is gonna be...then its 6 plus miles back to the truck. Its gonna be a demanding hunt if we cross the canyon but I am sure the reward will be worth it. We might be eating a lot of meat on the way out!

To each his own. Packed out probably 30 plus elk on pack frames, some mine, others in our group. A Mule or Horse is the BEST way, but cant hardly get one into the bowl we hunt due to the steepness.

I envy you because you have been on so many elk hunts, on the other hand it must have sucked to be you for a little while.
Yes, you would be correct. I remember several times I had a ham on my frame, and approaching the last 500 yds below camp. This is a very steep climb, where you have to hold onto bushes to climb. I've been down on my knees crawling at times, and wondering if I was going to get out myself. I'm now 53, and am starting to get a little tired. I still love it. We have taken lots of Elk since the early ninetys out of what we call the bowl, but it is a very physical hunt. Got a young first timer going with me this time, I'm planning on breaking him in.

A marathon runner looks to the next corner and says to himself "just make it to that corner", as he rounds the corner he looks down the road and says "just make it to that sign" and so on...

Climbing out of that bowl with a elk hind quarter on your back is similar. You tell yourself "If I can just get my knee to where my hand is..."

Tic Toc................

Last year was my first time and it was more than I expected. I actually got to hear buggling and I got to call one in for my buddy. I buggled that sucker right in and my little buddy sent it to its maker.

Bowhunting Bugling Elk is likely THE most exciting hunts I have ever been on! I haven't been in a few yrs now and cant wait to go back! My boys are now 12 and 15, couple more years and I plan to try and take them on their first Elk hunt!
