There is research out there that says Timbers from different areas can have venom that is more potent than Timbers from another area. At one time not so long ago Canebrakes were actually considered a different species as well. Now they are all considered the same, just a different phase of the same snake. Timber, Canebrake and Banded Rattlesnakes are all considered the same species or now. Some have rust colored stripes down their backs some have a darker stripe and some Timbers are actually almost all black. Very diverse reptile!!

Same here, but it was a Timber, got the shank of my boot as I stepped over a small dip. He never ratteled until after the strike!

I didn't even know I had been struck until the second time!

Funny, I would have never known either had he not rolled down the embankment and started to rattle. Very similar.

Pretty snake, but I hate snakes. That being said, if it's poisonous you should be allowed to kill it.

BSK's picture is huge. Wow!

Like others, I hope to never feel the hit from a striking snake. Snakes are so pretty but I want to see them way before they see me. This fellow does some high stepping when I see them.

Edited to add: I have NEVER the name Canebrake. Hummmmm.
