Scouting yesterday and encountered this area of bare ground. I have been through this part of the woods before, last time last winter and never saw this.
As you can see from the surrounding woods, there is underbrush that is fairly tight. Then the ground opens up and finally there is this large patch of bare dirt with not even hardly a leaf on it, about 15'x15'. Same overhead cover. Although adjacent to a major deer trail, there are no tracks of any kind in it. Way too big for a turkey dusting spot.
Other than Bigfoot's backyard, any idea what this is from?

I have a similar spot that I've always wondered about. No clue what makes it that way.

Would be a great location for a trail-camera!

I ran across the same thing last year on opening day of bow season, got to my stand and saw nearly the same thing. In the middle of the bare spot was also a tent... and a burned out campfire, and some pots and pans... Spent almost $100 on No Trespassing signs. I don't think mine was aliens... at least not space-aliens.

I think if this was the case he would be able to see some signs of clearing or human activity. Most people aren't too smart when it comes to covering their own tracks.

There are spots like that close to my family's place is east tn. Thay used to be strip mines around there and I figured it was them.

I have no idea why but places such as that appear now and then. I have one stand from which I have killed 39-deer in 13-years. It overlooks just such a patch. I have never seen a deer set foot in it. All the deer circles to the side of it and pass within 15-yards of my stand.

Could be something in the soil preventing growth. Take a sample and get it looked at.

I noticed at least two hickorys in the pic, do they produce heavily? If so, it could be a squirrel highway...

You could have allelopathy going on. Some plants suppress the growth of other plants. For example, black walnuts and pines suppress the growth of other plants around them. Tree of heaven does it too. There are many more, but those are all I can think of off the top of my head.

Allelopathic substace could be the cause. AKA chemical produce by plant that prevents any other competitive growth.

Exactly! Two major deer trails run right past this.
And no, not a single track (deer, turkey, raccoon), even after it had just rained. And no one has been camping.
I'll have to check the hickories.

Probably ghosts or spirits of some kind that show up late at night and dance in the woods. You may catch a glimpse of them when walking to your stand early in the morning before daylight. Don't waste your time on a trail cam. Ghost never show up on them. Good luck!

I was thinking a Leprechaun was rolling around on the ground & killed everything growing there.

Check around for a pot of gold.

Or maybe the Yeti got the gold. Oh well.

Seriously though, it's probably got something to do with a combination of a heavier leaf-growth on the canopy above and a higher rate of "harvesting" of the undergrowth by wildlife. Either that, or the soil may have something in it that has killed the majority of the forest floor.

Minus the rooting....from a flatlander...pigs do that down here. The bark looks smooth on one tree and the small one is bent. But the ground looks undisturbed...so I dunno lol

Folks, this is TN. What you have, as do I, is a small area where the soil is quite thin on top of the limestone. The shading trees retard grass and weed growth. That, coupled with various chemicals, stifles most growth. Nothing more, nothing less. No big mystery.
