Urban_Hunter, don't worry: I will NOT be doing this myself. Heck, I had to get assistance to read your post. Sadly, I am Mechanically Challenged. But as soon as I figure out what you wrote, I will keep it in mind!

ALSO!!! Do yourself a favor and draw a template of the timing cover out of cardboard. As you remove the bolts, plug them through cardboard so you can keep up with which ones go in which hole... nearly every one is a different length, but all the same size. If you pull them all out you will never get the right one back in the right hole. (This is assuming you pull the timing cover, which I strongly recommend so you can replace the tensioner and guides, the notorious 22re killer) I just keep remembering... also, clean the head bolt holes and bolts before reinstallation. If you have a set of thread restorers, use them. If not then buy an extra head bolt and make one yourself (don't use a tap). The ones around cylinder 2 like to fill with nasty oil and WILL affect your torque readings, and can also hyro-block your bolt making it feel bottomed out.

I am volunteering at the middle school today, handing out textbooks, so I'm in town. Will shoot you a PM now!

I have known about DRM from another site.... he knows his stuff due to off-roading and such.... Hope you get it fixed soon... It is a time needed project since you have to breakdown the items associated with changing the head gasket.... but it isn't that bad... just take it step by step if you do it yourself and remember how everything came apart so you can put it back together.

Sorry I must have been typing while you were. Let me know if you need help with anything. I don't mind at all, I am pretty familiar with this engine. I could do the repair, but I am currently backed up.. and it would be a long tow from spring hill to hendersonville. But if you have any questions, don't hesitate. ;\)

Ha! Thanks again for the input. Well, at least the GOOD input! :P

I met with DRM, who indeed is one cool dude! He gave knowledgeable confirmation that I'm looking at a bad head gasket, but he helped me know what to say on the phone when checking with a few mechanics, and I also got two good recommendations on local guys who will do a good job without taking advantage.

But beyond all that, I just enjoyed meeting another local TNDeer guy in person.

At least you didn't have to travel to South Dakota to meet someone from TNDeer.
