Variances occur in this like everything else on this earth. It's like seeing a buck still carrying antlers in April or May. Unusual but I've seen them.

I agree about the variance, but not about bucks still with antlers in April. That is the norm for healthy bucks, at least into early April.

I have only seen one or two here as late as April, and one in May. I have shot many the first week of January[our last week of hunting in Va] missing one or both already, or that fall off after the shot. It's pretty rare to see one w/ in late February here.

Like I said, healthy bucks will hold their antlers until April. However, in the wild, few bucks are truly healthy post-rut and through the winter. But south of the Ohio River, antler drop timing is such a good indicator of buck health that it is often tracked as a key indicator of management success.
