Engine light came on, and I realized the engine showed hot, which was weird since I had a new radiator and thermostat put in last March. When it cooled down, found it was several quarts low on water. Filled her up.

Since then I have determined:
1) no water shows up on the ground where I park.
2) it loses almost a gallon in the course of a little daily driving
3) looks like some blowback is on the engine behind the radiator
4) I don't see any active leaks when I crawl under the engine even when it's hot

So does this sound like the water pump has gone bad? Strangely, I don't know that I've ever had to have one replaced despite all my years of car ownership.

If the oil dipstick shows milky or frothy oil, you may have a blown head gasket. Same for if you check the radiator and see oil in the radiator fluid. You also may have a head gasket blown where it is leaking coolant out the tail pipe.

Is your radiator overflow tank empty or full?

No evidence of anything at the tailpipe. Just some greasy residue on the engine behind the radiator. Did I use "blowback" incorrectly?

Water is going somewhere, Fire it up and let it run/idle a bit and see if it comes out of the overflow tube.

Basically, water is evaporating (bad radiator cap possibly), entering the oil, overflowing, or exiting the tail pipe.

You can also buy a UV dye kit at the auto parts store to add to the fluid then use a blacklight to check where it's going.

Water pumps typically gush after the engine stops turning.

Sounds like a dreaded head gasket. Take the cap off the radiator and start it up(cold). Put your hand over the radiator (where the cap goes) and see if it is pulsing (you can feel air blowing out of it). Sometimes it has to heat up to start pulsing. If so... head gasket, if not, maybe still head gasket. If it heats up be careful putting your hand there.. it will be hot steam.

DADGUMMIT!! It IS the head gasket, apparently.

Pulled the dipstick and its halfway up the stick! Guess I know where all the water is going. Dangdangdang!

I've never had to deal with head gasket issues. I need to find someone to do the work now.

This is gonna hurt, ain't it?
