Thinking about buying my first and know little about them, need some help guys. Whats the best for the money? Barnett Ghost 410 caught my eye. 149 Ft. lb. of knock down is wicked. Help me pick the right one.

Some ppl. love that Brand, i wouldn't touch one. I haven't ever put any part of my hands on one of them. I have seen 1st hand some of the outcomes of shootin them. Get you a good Recurve fer yer 1st crossbow. Simple yet does the job well, then if'en you want a compound style get one

My first Xbow was a Barnett Quad 400. I still have it and will use it for a backup. But i'm a do it yourself type of guy and just despised having to take it to an archery shop to change the string, cables, etc. Soooo, I just recently purchased an Excalibur, now I can change strings and even uncock my bow at the end of the hunt.
The Barnett served me well and IMO was a good Xbow to start with just to see if I really wanted to go the crossbow route. But I like my Excal much better.

I agree with this 100%. You cant go wrong with an Excalibur. I wouldnt trade mine for 2 of any other Xbow.

I would really like to have a ghost 410, but my quad 400 has been good to me. Nothing wrong with a Barnett.

Started hunting with an old Jennings and Bryant back in 1999 and hunted with it until it finally broke down in 2005. Then I got a Ten Point Titan. To me, I don't care how fast they shoot because my shots are well under 30 yards. Point is get what is comfortable to you IMO. Never missed or lost a deer with either. Okay, may have missed one.

Excalibur for recurve.(simple, easy to maintain)
TenPoint for compound.
Both extremely accurate and have very long, excellent track records for great customer service.
These two brands are "best for your money" IMO
Good luck

I suggest you try a excal before you buy one if you plan on going that route. they are real wide and pretty dang loud. dry fire loud! Especially the new matrix. i was really suprised by just how loud it was. my wife could heair me shooting it inside the house with all doors and windows shut. but i.guess its to be expected with a 260 lb draw weight

Thanks to all that have responded. I'm a long time Archer and have blamed crossbows for the down fall of archery since TWRA changed its regulation years ago. Seems alot of clubs have just gone away due to people just not shooting anymore, just sight in and go hunting like a rifle. Well, I can either set on the porch or run with the rest of the ole dogs. But my heart will always be with a traditional bow, Be it compound, longbow, or recurve. But MAN those crossbows are BADDDDDD! and been around for thousands of years. Can't wait to get mine. I'm sure all my buddies I've ribbed through the years for using a "Cheater Bows" are gonna have a blast! Sorta like purchasing your first Chevy after being a Ford man your entire life.
