I need a good starter BBQ sauce recipe I can play with. I want to try to experiment with adding a few ingredients.

Ignore the one where it's suggested mixing Kraft Zesty Italian with Ketchup.

Here's a previous thread on BBQ sauces:

...and my recipe:
1 cup beer
1 cup apple cider
1 cup cider vinegar
1 cup coffee
1 cup beef or chicken stock
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons Tabasco sauce
2 teaspoons kosher or sea salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 cups of tomato sauce
1 to 2 cups your favorite mild or hot salsa(hot if you want the kick)
Kosher or sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Place all ingredients in a bowl and whisk to mix. Taste for seasoning, adding more salt, if necessary. Reduce on the stovetop until you get the desired thickness.

1 cup balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoons olive oil
1/3 cup finely minced shallots (about 1 medium)
2 teaspoons freshly minced garlic (about 2 medium cloves)
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon molasses
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper, plus more to taste
Kosher salt, to taste
here is what I have used with great results,not my recipe but good ,just a lite simmer to reduce it & tenderize the shallots
