Bought a new browning x bolt. Shot it this afternoon for the first time. Went through the barrel break in process etc. The groups were not terrible but not nearly what I expected. I'm used to much tighter groups. How many rounds does it take to break in a new rifle?

There's no exact number of rounds to get any barrel broke in. My round count on my newest rifle is 156 and it seems to just now be settling in, I have had it just over a month. However, I have seen rifles that were pretty much there with under 30 rounds down the barrel.

Finding the ammo it prefers might take a while also if you dont hand load.

Assuming you cleaned the barrel before you shot it (which is Rule #1), you can save a ton of ammo by hitting it with some JB Bore cleaner and Kroil (or Remington 40X cleaner if you don't want to wait on the JB to come in). Follow that up by some JB Bore Brite and you'll have accomplished the same thing 150 rounds would have. All the "break in" does is smooth up any rough tooling marks in the barrel. JB is a micro abrasive that pretty much polishes the inside of the barrel, just don't use it in the chamber. And don't leave it in the barrel.

I did clean it well and used copper solvents and regular gun solvent between shots. I tried 2 types of ammo yesterday and shot about 35 rounds. I was looking for something to speed it up without burning $200 on ammo. I have a trip in 6 weeks. Thanks for the tip on the JB.

You're doing it wrong. Proper barrel break-in:

Yea I saw that one, half forums say it's pointless, other half say it helps. This was my first new rifle and Browning says to do it. Figured it wouldn't hurt

If Browning says do then by all means do it. It sure don't hurt nothing and if nothing else it gets you use to the gun.

Why worry about groups out of a hunting rifle? Just as long as the first round hits where your aiming, that's the one that counts.
