We are going to Colorado the 1st and second week of september for an elk hunt and I want to get some new 10x42 or so binos. I want to spend less than $500. What would you suggest. Id like to stay around 3 to 350, but if its worth it I would go to around 500. Thanks for your help.

Check out the Vortex brand, they have a lifetime no fault warranty. I have a spotting scope from them and I am pleased.

I have been looking at the Viper HDs and they are nice. I just want to buy a nice pair once and its hard looking at pair after pair, because when you get up into the 3 to 700 dollar range they all look great. Could you guys recomend some realistic tests that I could do to prove the extra money is worth it. I just want to make sure that the extra 300 bucks is worth it. I dont want to sound cheap, but man stuff adds up quick for a big hunt.

Your telling me... I am acquiring gear as well. I have everything except Boots, Pants, Merino Wool base layers, bullets, socks, etc.. etc... it goes on and on. I will be using an older pair of Nikon Monarchs and to me they have similar clarity to the higher priced binos. The Viper HD's look great, and I may have gone that route if I had the money.

Man we are in the same boat. Clothes, base layers, "to single pin or not to single pin", (possibly a sight for my bow). I like to buy once if possible, and hate regretting a purchase. The good thing is as long as we dont gain tons of weight, we can use them next year.

Pentax makes some good binos. I had a pair of their SP models a few years ago before upgrading to my Swaros.

Ive got a set of Steiner Merlins (10x42) I'd sell for what your looking to spend. They are in excellent condition if you are interested.
