I have always been told that you should never hunt or eat a squirrel before the first big frost . ( Any truth to that !) I haven't been since I was a kid and kinda want to get the squirrel gun back in the woods . But once deer season starts I want have a chance till jan and feb .

They say that because of the wolves in them (jar fly larva). I never worry. They skin out just fine. Kinda creepy looking but you don't eat them.

actually it's a bot fly larva and it does nothing to harm the meat. they just ain't pretty.

Yeah, and they are also relatively rare. I've encountered bot flies just a handful of times.

I know of places where they will be on every squirrel and other places I have never seen one. i have heard a proximity to cattle has something to do with it.

The last time I went squirrel hunting with dad . I must have been 10 or so . He killed a fox squirrel that had them . I just assumed they all would have them at some point . Thanks for y'all's help .

i kill about 80-100 each yr in between opening day of squirrel and sept 15th. i have only had one squirrel have one. best time to hunt squirrels in in august-october. cuttin hickories, nothing like it
