Without seeing the teeth, any age assessment is even more of a "guess".
My best "guess" would be 4 1/2 years old when killed.

I had "guesstimated" the age of this deer to be 4-1/2 at the time of the kill. I could see that he had incredible mass,(this deer green scored 138-3/8) with only a 15 in. inside spread. When I checked him out, the TWRA officer present checked his teeth and aged him at 3-1/2. His body and antlers combined to fool me I guess, but I sure thought he was 4-1/2 at my best guess. His base circumference was nearly 5 in. BTW.

You can't judge age by antlers. I've seen mature bucks that gross anywhere from 60 on up.

Yup, that's why I called it a "guesstimation".

I don't care how old he is, I'd be proud to have it shoulder mounted in my home.

When I checked him out, the TWRA officer present checked his teeth and aged him at 3-1/2. That does not mean your buck was not 4 1/2. Aging by tooth wear is still "guessing", and it is not uncommon that 4 1/2-yr-old bucks are guessed to be 3 1/2 based on their teeth.
Provided the bucks were killed in November, using the teeth, it would be uncommon to misjudge the age of a yearling up to a 2 1/2, but this method becomes progressively less accurate from 3 1/2 and older deer.

Great TN buck! 2.5 yo necks don't swell quite that. I'd say 3.5 min.

Awesome deer. To me he looks 3.5 and no older by facial features. (short snout and small ears.) By 4.5 I'd expect his head to be more blocky and his ears a little droppier. But then I've seen deer that I know for a fact are 1.5 and look like "opie". If your within a year your doing pretty good on aging. Especially the 3.5 to 4.5 range those are the two hardest years to distinguish against in my opinion.
