I agree. We have an old buck, probably 5.5 or up. That when he would visit a food sight in daylight he would stick around, but when light was low enough for the flash to go off he would leave after the second photo, and the rest of the bachelor group would stick around. I think a flash will make different deer respond differently just like they do everything else. That's why when I use to use a camera to try and scout I used one that didn't have a flash.

Yes, trail-cams will scare deer away from that spot at that time, and eventually they will learn to avoid the camera altogether. But you will get the very same results with IR cams. They scare deer just as much.

8Up, notice the deer in the first pic. He is staring directly at the cam. He couldn't have heard the cam, as the picture would have been taken before he could have time to turn and look at the cam. With this thought in mind, the IR cams still have a red light that goes off. If the deer is looking at the cam, as this deer was at the time of the picture, I think as BSK says the IR flash scares them just as much. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. Seems like the camera has done its job by showing me whats out there. Now it may be time to remove the camera so the nice bucks might use that area a little more??

You never know 8up. My research into seasonal buck ranges shows that as much as 50% of the bucks that use a particular property during summer leave the property come fall. However, those bucks that do leave are generally replaced by new bucks moving in come fall (generally not a net loss or gain in total bucks). So don't count on that particular buck being on your property come fall.

Some deer seem uneffected by the light flashes, others are spooked. I do believe the IR flashes spook less on those deer that are sensitive to it. Also think the older the deer, the more likely it is to be bothered by a flash, whether regular or IR.
One thing that particularly disappointed me about the IR video was that it was much more noticable to deer than a regular camera flash. I was initially excited about IR video until I saw how many deer it was spooking. They would come feeding across a food plot, see the constant light, look at it, and then take off. Many of these deer didn't seem to notice a regular camera flash (nor a single IR flash).
I know your question was not regarding video, but for those who might be wondering, the video itself was of such poor quality (and detrimental to getting better quality still pics) that I quickly stopped setting the cam for video. In this case, the Cuddeback No Flash was supposed to take a single still pic, and then follow that still with several seconds (up to 60) of video footage. But the video footage would take so long to transfer to the card that the cam might not take another still pic for several minutes following the video clip, which again, was of such poor quality it was of little value anyway. I simply prefer to get 2 or 3 better quality still pics, than a single still pic followed by a few seconds of blurry video.

I had the exact same experience Wes. Not only was the video of very poor quality, the constant IR light needed for night video was freaking the deer out.

I got over 30 pics of this deer, not sure how mature he is but he kept coming back and getting his pic taken, about half at night, half during the day---if it spooked him he sure didn't act like it..I guess every deer is different.
