Seems like every year since we started having a dove field that we draw in a decent number of pigeons. Seems like every year the old timers keep saying,"It's just a big dove, tastes the same with more meat on the bone". However, when people see them coming in from deep and start yelling bird, then notice they are pigeons and sit back down after exclaiming "[censored] pigeons" with utter digust. Any of you guys harvest/eat pigeons from the dove field? I never have because no one else does, and we hunt with up to 20 people...

I kill and eat them frequently. -taste is indistinguishable from dove. The guys that are demonstrating "utter disgust" need to reconsider their perspective of the world and hunting. If you are disgusted by the idea of eating a pigeon, you should be disgusted by the idea of eating a dove. -no way around it.

You should kill them, eat them and make fun of all your friends for being weak gutted, sissy hunters \:D

LOL... don't much care for leather boots. I will give it a try if I get a good chance on some this year, judging by past years I will get a real good chance.

If you pluck your birds, which takes less than 1 minute each, you will not experience the drying out issues. Skinless birds are problematic to cook and, not to mention, less tasty.

if I were a better wing shooter I'd have shot a few while dove hunting last year. Hopefully better luck this year. I have resorted to shooting them on the nest with a BB gun though. taste good cooked on the bone, I have one whole dressed pigeon in the freezer right now.

I have never in all my years seen anyone pass up a pigeon at a dove shoot...Personally, I'll pass the dove to shoot the pigeon.
Not because of the table fare, but because its a dam pigeon!!
Technically, their both doves, one is a mourning and the other a rock....Those renegade racers give a good opportunity for some "bling" too!!!!

I will go shoot pigeons before I do doves. I have killed a lot of both. They taste the same and the local farmers will let me shoot them around the barns.

I will gladly shoot a piegon purely on principle. Any dove that flys through a dove field in early september deserves the same fate. Be it mourning, Eurasian, rock, or otherwise.

My thoughts exactly. My problem with eating pigeons, especially around a dairy farm, is they are usually resident pigeons that spend a lot of time living in, on, and around cow poop. I have seen them eat the grain from fresh piles of cow poop. That is not a bird I want to eat. Might taste like filet mignon wrapped in bacon, but I know what they eat. I do shoot them on site every time, most dairy farmers view them as pests, and want them gone. Plus they make a great thud sound when they fall out of the sky.

We shoot them in our dove fields, but don't eat them. Coyotes got to eat. Like Kimberman says, I know what they eat (Grain out of cow poop), and I aint eating that. I also like the thud sound they make when hitting the ground.

EVERY turkey that spends time in or around a cow pasture (even when you kill them elsewhere) eats grain out of cow poop, and they all taste delicious.

Very true and good point. That would lead us to the next question: Does a hunter who refuses to eat pigeons also refuse to eat catfish?
