I have about a 7 acre block of mostly sweetgums on my farm. Not quite big enough to cut for cross ties and such but the have a complete canopy and no sunlight is touching the ground. I am thinking about going through an hinge cutting a few thinning them out some so the rest can come on. Can this create as good of deer habitat as I am hearing? I would love to create good cover as that is one thing I am lacking.

Yes it can produce great habitat. But you'll quickly find out just how demanding the labor is to hinge-cut large areas. Not try to discourage you--have at it--but it sounds a lot easier than it is!

do some research on this.. I was at a lumber luncheon once and the speaker there said they had done test on this and it did really help the trees hat were left to grow and faster... maybe the results have changed... this was 20 years ago..

It all depends on how many trees you hinge-cut. Lots of good research out there on which (and how many) surrounding trees to remove to get the best improvement in the timber left standing. In addition, hinge-cutting is more about producing cover habitat and natural food for deer.
