This month's Bowhunting World magazine has an article on reading rubs. The article shares some info from Tennessee researcher Bryan Kinkel. Just curious who that might be if anybody knows.

The article and reference to Mr. Kinkel was printed without permission. Mr. Kinkel would never contribute to a bowhunting rag. He only hunts on private land, with a gun. He actually hunts the entire gun season, with a gun, on private land.

We would normally only see his works published in Quality Whitetails and Wildlife Society bulletins (or perhaps via a book). However, there is a rumor that North American Whitetail might be replacing some Troll (or is it Kroll?) guy with Kinkel.

You talking about Kroll or Kinkel?

And does one need an unusual name to be involved with deer research?

Maybe this bowhunting article was written by Randy Travis's half-brother? There's another TN deer researcher in TN, think his name is Craig Harper http://www.randytravis.com/ ? Anyway, the Harper researcher guy looks like Randy Travis (and is a big bowhunter); Kroll & Kinkel look like some characters from a Stephen King movie, and neither know either end of an arrow.

In all seriousness, if that article is anything like the 2 part artcile about rubs on the QDMA website then it has to be pretty good.

I came across the article on the website and thought that was pretty cool.

Same data MattR. The author of the magazine article called me on the phone and interviewed me about that research.

But yea I liked the article, while reading I was thinking, man this is really informative, the research is there, heck yea why don't more people write like this guy does.

Then I remembered , oh yea because most people are trying to sell hunting equipment or books!

MattR,

I made a conscious decision early on that all of my research would be geared towards learning things about deer and deer hunting that hunters would find useful and interesting (because I wanted to know the answers too). Not that I'm denigrating research geared towards knowledge of deer for knowledge's sake, but I'll leave that type of research to universities and grad students.

Also notice how much good it did!

The fire was so hot the aluminum head on the engine liquefied and ran like lava across the ground.

Actually it was an old rusty pull-style disk a farmer had given me. One of those rusted over disks you see in the back-corner of a farmyard, overgrown with brush.

Hey, you are talking about my disk! It's from the WWII era. Has seen better days but I keep it patched up and going with my meager welding skills.

I heard Bsk

Can parallel park a train.

That mosquitoes refuse to bite him, just out of respect.

If he were to punch you in the face, you would have to fight off the urge to thank him.

He lives vicariously through himself.

He once had an awkward moment, just to see how it feels.

He has inside jokes with complete strangers

The police often question him just because they find him interesting.

His words carry weight that would break a less interesting man's jaw.

Been looking for an excuse to use some of those

I know this is going to sound incredulous, but I really did get stopped by a policemen because he thought I might be "BSK" and he wanted to talk deer management. He was a lurker here and had seen all the pictures. He said the orange ATV in the back of my truck was the dead giveaway! We talked deer for about 10 minutes and then I was on my way. Really nice guy actually.

Sort of. Bryan Kinkel is just some dude. BSK is a legend. Bryan Kinkel couldn't wrestle a lunch from a wet paper bag. BSK wrestles a train to rescue his ATV! \:D

If you think it's safe to park your ATV on the train tracks in TX--because you would see or hear the train coming from miles away--think again!

Nice! \:D

Wasn't so nice when the train literally took that ATV right out of my hands. How I didn't get killed I'll never know.

I didn't get out of the way. I was pulling the ATV sideways to get it off the tracks. One second I'm pulling on the front and rear racks as hard as I can, and the next I'm standing there empty-handed, with a train flashing past a foot in front of my face. I literally didn't feel the ATV being ripped out of my hands. And I truly had a death grip on it at the time.

The train was going over 60 MPH. I still don't understand why the ATV didn't explode into a million pieces. It just sailed about 150 feet in the air and landed on it's tires in the ditch along the edge of the right-of-way.

Yeah, but it was TX, where you can see a train coming for miles.

...or so I thought.

Good articles Bryan, first time I had read them. Edges are HUGE and sometimes the very most subtle ones can be the best!! And terrain is a HUGE piece of the puzzle when it comes to mature deer movement!!! Good reads.

You have to appreciate a man who can laugh at himself. From now on when I do something like leave the plug out of the boat and motor across the lake, I just say I had a BSK moment. Everyone understands! \:\)

Just wait until you catch your outboard motor on fire. THAT would definitely qualify as a "BSK moment." \:o

I heard that there will be a new law on the books this year outlawing nocturnal brooming deer and that BSK was solely responsible for TWRA's actions in implementation.

Chuck Norris was a staunch supporter of lower buck limits, until BSK enlightened him. Now Chuck is in the biologist apprentice program and making mostly A's.
