I have noticed lately that the demand for Ruger M77 skeleton stocks has gone through the roof. Does anyone know why everyone seems to want these so bad? If so, could you tell me? The most interest seems to be for the .260. Thanks in advance.

I don't have a clue. They were ugly as sin and kicked the crap out of you. They were very durable, and if you canoed into your hunting spot, the gun could double as a paddle. It seems you couldnt give one away 15-20 years ago, now they are in high demand, I have seen some short actions on gunbroker go for over a grand. I do like the stainless finish that came with those guns, and have seen a few that the owner dropped in a wood stock that looked very nice.

I have one in 25/06 and 223. My ex-father in law has one in 30/06. Very accurate, and I have considered getting a boyds stock for my 25/06. I paid a little over 400 each when I bought mine new 15 or so years ago.

All the hype is from the Johnny come latelys-I always liked the skeleton stocks because they are practical above all else. They ain't pretty like a nice piece of wood but when it is raining or snowing or muddy or dusty or hot or cold they come through unscathed. I bought my .260 in 1999 and it has killed a bunch of deer- not because of the stock but because of the caliber and my choice to use it. The 6.5s are the best when all things are considered in a big game hunting rifle. I sold a .270 but hope to never give up my .260 except to one of my sons. It is one of my favorite rifles. One of many from several years ago.

Thanks for the replies. I wondered if it had to do with all the tv shows about Alaska lately. I've seen a few on those shows. Thanks again. Anyone else have more ideas?

I forgot to mention. Just the stocks were going on EBay for $200 to $300 for a while.

It's just my opinion but I think they popularized stainless synthetic guns when they first hit the scene. I know they were the first stainless bolt guns I remember seeing and it seemed like everyone was buying one. Several guys at work hunt with them, although most of them have done like Plateau Hunter did and put camo or black tape on the barrel to keep them from shining in the sun.

I got a buddy who carried his in a 7mag on his combine. Gun never left the inside of the combine. If he was in a cotton picker or a combine, that gun was always with him. He was picking cotton in 03 and the picker caught on fire. If y'all ain't never saw a cotton picker catch fire, well its fast, super fast. He barely got out but the rifle got burnt up. Melted the stock completely off the barrel and melted the glass out of the leupold. He took the barrel to a gunsmith, they cleaned it up and found a identical skeleton stock for it, put a new leupold on it and he is still using it today!!

At the time I bought mine in 25/06, I really didn't care if it had the skeleton stock or not. I just wanted a Ruger in 25/06. I outfitted mine with a Leupold VX-1 and took a nice 6 pointer that was around 125 yards thru the woods. Deer went about 15 yards. It was a tough shot thru the woods. That was the last deer I killed with it, and it was the year the EHD was really bad around here. I have moved on to using my Rem 7600 in 25/06.

haha, it was! It was also about a $250K story as well! They had modified it from a 4 row to a 6 row and the insurance would not cover it!!!!

There's one on gunbroker for $634 with burris fullfield I 3-9 and a few days left. The one on GOC has a VX-II 3-9 on it. I saw one in 260 go over a grand on gunbroker without a scope.
