Trying to get my son (11) to be able to catch more fish.... relatively new to the fishing thing. Took son to the lake last night and the Stripers and White bass were hitting the suraface pretty good in one area. We were on top of them and they were hitting everywhere. We were throwing top water plugs that looks like a small bass and you pop it across the surface... He cuaght 4 fish...

I am looking for suggestion on catching some more of these fish... Any lures or techniques you would be suggested would be apperciated... Should we be fishing top water only when they are hitting or is it worth it to thow other things when they are hitting the surface?

My son has been bit by the fishing bug and really trying to help him get into mess of fish for fun.

thanks

A topwater in a shad color would likely do better than the bass color.

Try tying on a dropper to one of the rear treble hooks 12-14" long with a small white jig or grub on the dropper. You can catch some fish that won't hit on top, and occassionally when it gets wild you can catch two at a time.

A silver Kastmaster, Sidewinder, or 1/4 silver blue back rattletrap can often get more hits in the "breaks" than topwater. But, noting is more fun than the topwater action.

even if they are hitting baits on topwater, they are hard to catch on artificial lure, timings gotta be perfect.....which lady luck will help. try a steady retrieve, dont jerk it.dont throw the lure at the boil, but away from it. ive seen them bust top water and slowly motor to it and they be 100 yards away from it bustin top somwhere else. but when you see them bust 100 square yards of surface like someone is shooting a full auto machine gun then it be a guarantee catch, artificials is the only way i fish for them

If your talking about the hybrid stripe or white bass I use to keep a rod with a larger rooster tail on...You can cast into them and pretty much catch one every throw...If your talking about striper or rock fish I am learning too...

Get you some small Little Georges. You can cast them a mile and fish them fast on top or let them fall below the surface.

The roostertail is a good one, but I got to experimenting with it on Ft Loudoun when the white bass would school up on top in the summer time. The best I found was a small bass worm hook in a 2" zoom fluke in pearl color was a stellar combo. No weights, they would hammer'em!

If you get in'em right, I swear you could put a hook through a shoe and throw it out and they would still hit it!!!

1/8 or 1/4 ounce rattle traps in a shiny or shad color. You can cast them a mile, and the treble hooks will help your hookup ratio.
