One thing the X-bolt has going against it is the magazine. 30 years from now the X-bolt may not be made anymore and if he loses the magazine, it may be hard to find a replacement. The A-bolt would be a better choice IMO if you wanted a Browning.

If your going to get a 700, spend the money and get a BDL, CDL or one of the other higher end 700's that Remington makes. The model 700 XCR II is nice with the TriNyte coating. Supposed to be just as weather proof and rust resistant as stainless.

Great suggestion. WalMart 700 ADLs and SPSs are blued differently than BDLs and CDLs. They have a rougher finish and are generally less attractive. A BDL in 7mm-08 would definitely last him a lifetime. Dad still hunts with his that he bought new in '78. And thanks to the Kane gun chap that he bought at the same time, the stock looks brand new.

Can't go wrong with either as long as it fits him correctly, excellent caliber choice! I bought the stainless 700 7/08 and put a zeiss conquest on it for my son when he was 6. I really like the x mark trigger too!

I bought my son a Browning X Bolt last Christmas.
They don't make the A Bolt anymore or I would have gotten that.

After feeling it, I will NOT say I like it better than my A Bolt, but it is very very nice. Very nice.

In my humble opinion There is no finer rifle than the Browning.
You will get as many answers as there are rifles out there, but between the two choices you gave, Browning hands down.

I am sure the Remington is a fine rifle because there have probably been more 700's sold than any other bolt rifle out there.

I had one.... true that you can get any bad gun from any maker but after my nightmare I will never own another one.

Best of luck to ya man.

I agree that the A Bolt is a great gun, and I prefer it to the X-Bolt, but why do you think they don't make them anymore? Ive seen them in the stores last time I looked, and their website still shows nine variations of the A-Bolt II, and one of the new A-Bolt 3 that was just introduced this year.

I never cared much for the 700.
