Looks like that buck lost 25" of mass when he shed his velvet. Doesn't he have a extra point between his G2 and G3/ crab claw on his left side in velvet that's missing with his hard antlers?

Not an extra typical point. That's a little sticker point on his G2. You can't see it in the November picture I posted, but yes, he still has that little sticker point. In fact, he had it the two years previous.

And your right about mass. That's why it's so hard to judge the score of a velvet rack. The velvet makes the mass look far more impressive than it really is.

Another reason this bucks rack looks smaller in the Fall is that his neck is way thicker. Combine the loss of velvet with the massive neck and the rack is bound to be thicker.

And BSK, on a positive note, be glad you can't find him during hunting season. You might break something trying to drag him out of the woods! \:\) Seriously though, it adds something to the hunt knowing that the unattainable is out there. Sort of like the episode of The Andy Griffith Show with the fish everybody called "Old Sam". Everybody in Mayberry had tried to catch him and failed but as soon as Howard DID catch him, fishing held no excitement to them any more.

Absolutely true. A large bodied buck can make impressive antlers look smaller than they are. The opposite is true as well. The tiny-bodied deer of South TX make their average racks look HUGE!

I really think there's a lot to that. Some hunters shy away from using trail-cameras because they prefer the "mystery" of wondering if old mossyhorns is really out there. However, I find that knowing a buck or two that I consider a trophy is really out there ads immeasurably to the excitement of the hunt.

Old enough to be shot for sure! Ground checks are the best way to determine age!
