We (my dad & I) recently acquired our first tractor, along with a bush hog, disc, turning plow and blade.

We have several small fields that we want to work up for deer, etc., and have started and are continuing to bush hog.

My question regards whether to use the single-blade turning plow or the disc to get the ground ready for the seed? They have been planted in clover, wheat, and some corn before, but anywhere from 3-5 yrs ago.

If we don't need the plow for this, is there any reason to keep it?

Especially for fallow ground that hasn't been worked in a long time and is very heavily compacted, the turning plow certainly still has a place in preparation. That being said, using it year after year is neither healthy for the soil (soil structure, good microbes, organic matter et al) nor is it required for most planting.

Depending on the weight of your disk, debris remaining after mowing, and soil condition you may be able to do fine with a few passes. But if you find that you aren't getting good dirt exposed and just "scratching the surface" hookup the moldboard.

I too just acquired my 1st tractor last December and a disc this past spring. The disc is huge...13ft pull type IH 480. We broke ground with this thing that had never been broken before. Took only 3 or 4 passes in most cases. Granted...its way heavier than the 4, 5, or 6 ft disc that most people have for deer plots.

That said, it really depends on how heavy the disc is. I would say make a pass or two and if it is doing what you want it to do, stick with it. If not, hook up the plow.
