WASHINGTON (AP) Door-to-door mail delivery is about as American as apple pie. With the Postal Service facing billions of dollars in annual losses, that tradition could be virtually phased out by 2022 under a proposal in Congress.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday approved a plan to move to cluster box and curbside delivery, which includes mailboxes at the end of driveways.

My vote would be to do away with delivery on Wed. or Thurs. where there is never more than a day (except holiday situations) between deliveries.

They need to do something to cut some of the losses, but I'm not sure making the elderly walk to their "cluster" boxes at the end of the street is the answer.

Good point, or even a Mon,Wed,Fri Delivery would be a better start at cutting- before they go to these crazy cluster boxes I would expect them to reduce the number of delivery days.

I already have curb side so that is no big deal. As far as I care they could drop a couple of days of delivery. Heck once a week delivery would be enough.

Apparently my carrier is ahead of the game. She won't deliver to my box beside the road. Says she can't get to the neighboring box that hasn't been used in 10 years.

I have a friend that works for the USPS and he says they are the Fed's cash cow. What other Federal Agencies do you see advertising or sponsoring athletics?

Guess I've never had door delivery so it seems silly to me! I've had a mailbox my entire life.

They need to cut out 2-3 days a week. Nobody would really take notice. It's a business that cannot be sustained. Kind of like 8 tracks, cassettes, and CDs.
