BUT, if all we were doing was to let those top-end yearling and 2 1/2-yr-old bucks walk, we would be seeing a lot of 130-plus class 3 1/2's (certainly not a mature buck).

By the way, tell us again what your highest scoring buck scored and what was his age? And just think, if you had seen him when he was 2 1/2, you would have killed a 120-class 2 1/2 instead of a 160-class 3 1/2? Seems a small price to pay in passing up those better 2 1/2's in exchange for great opportunity at a world-class 3 1/2 or older?

157 and change. I would love to know what he was at 2 1/2.

Nah, I'll still pop the first top-end 2 1/2 I see (but then pass any 2 1/2s after that), simply because "big" bucks are not my reason for hunting anymore. I just want to kill a "decent" buck each year and have fun with my family. Besides, we kill only a small percentage of the older bucks in the area, and we still have at least one TN Registry caliber buck using our place each year, and have for almost a decade. We just rarely see/kill THAT buck!

Yep! You may have killed the new #1 Typical Tennessee Buck --- just shot him a couple years too soon! \:D A 3 1/2-yr-old old scoring 157!

A few years ago we had what appeared to be a 2 1/2 that scored in the 120's. Some how, he survived another year. He grossed 167 and some change when taken 1 year later. I've seen many 2 1/2's scoring in the 110 to 125 range (in TN) ---- just extremely rare that one of those survives to 3 1/2. A friend of mine killed a 2 1/2 in Obion County that was a clean 5x5 grossing 146.

Guess it's all in how one defines "decent". \:D
To me, "decent" generally means 4 1/2 or older.
And a mistake is 3 1/2 or younger.

My hope is we will TREND more to defining "decent" based generally more on age than antlers. Then we will all have more opportunity at really "decent" bucks. \:\)

Odds are very, very high they are full of it. Largest yearling I've ever seen in TN was around 100 gross. Largest 2 1/2, near 130.

The 126" deer I killed with a bow last year turned out to be 2.5 years old. I thought he would have been older but I was wrong. If I had it to do over I would probably shoot him again but man I am always thinking of what he would have looked like this year or next...

For me, 100+ is "decent."

This my buck from last year. I had a blast killing him, and relive the memories ever time I see the picture. And before anyone asks, I've killed dozens of bucks just like this one, and every one was special.

I've also killed quite a few bucks larger (a few much larger) and older, and they are all special too.

I like your high grading theory, always have. We could no doubt see bigger deer if we let the 2.5 120's walk BUT I know why BSK shoots the higher end young bucks... he knows that he'll probably never see them in daylight after 4.5 ;\)

Its all in the eye of the beholder. To me, if it makes me happy or if I had fun doing it, thats all that matters.

BSK would have much higher success with mature bucks if he had the skill level of a bowhunter.
