Have been using the gut less method for a long time on deer & elk.

Couple of things that I have learned over 25 years of DIY elk hunting is to have a small block & tackle to reposition elk and/or to tie it off to keep it from rolling down the mtn while you are working on it. The other is to have several sharp knives and a sharpener with you. I also keep a Wyoming Pack Saw in my bag of game cleaning stuff. Speaking of the bag, years ago I started putting everything that I needed to process an elk in the field in one small backpack. The pack stays at camp until needed. That way, I don't have to worry about forgetting something.

From personal experience I second the use of a rope or block&tackle.
