Looks like NC is going to legalize baiting for bear.

Baiting for deer is already legal.

It also raises the out of state bear license by $100, and the houndsmen seem to be against it because they are afraid it will increase the cost of leases. It will also require in state hunters to pay an additional $10 for the bear stamp.

As it stands now, houndsmen can strike a bear track at a bait pile, you just can't sit over the bait and hunt.

I am afraid I have to agree with the statements in the articles I read that stated the bear harvest would go up dramatically.

Of course, it will still leave the types of bait allowed up to the commission, and chances are they will be very restrictive. Bears are almost as susceptible to bait as turkeys, especially in the fall when they are in hyperphagy.

Bears are no more susceptible to baiting than deer are.

Because baiting for deer is legal, the wildlife department realized it had to legalize baiting for bears.

The bear and deer seasons overlap.

There was simply no other choice. Bear hunters were being cited for hunting near bait sites for deer.

Wrong...read pages 26-36 of the below scientific article published by the Wildlife Society. Baiting dramatically effects bear behavior and even fosters dependence on the bait for survival.
They even address North Carolina where, in one year, 14% of the bears killed came from an area less than 1000 acres in size. This area had been baited with large sugar blocks.

Using sugar blocks for bears (and anything else) was outlawed some years ago.

If baiting is legalized it will be for just corn or grain. Same things legal for deer.

I hate that, I really do:(
Its not the ethical considerations I hate about it. Heck I was born and raised in North Carolina and go back home every chance I get. Baiting deer does'nt bother me.
What does bother me, is that there's a reason Eastern NC is a world class bear destination. And I firmly believe its because baiting was not allowed. Bears get stupid around bait. Stupid bear=dead bear. And its impossible for a dead bear to get to a world class size, if every tom, dick and harry shoots the first 300 lb'er that comes into the corn pile.
North Carolina, does'nt really have much "claim to fame" when it comes to wildlife. But the two things they have are the opportunity to shoot a tundra swan, and the largest black bears of anywhere in the world (eastern NC). I'm afraid, giant bears will be a thing of the past once baiting starts full force.
It was'nt really fair the way the law was set up now though. Hound hunters could turn out bear dogs on a bait site, but still hunters can't hunt over it?? I still don't agree with bear baiting, but it was'nt fair.
