There are lots of databases on these. If it's in good shape I would. They come in either 7mm or 8mm though some were later reconditioned to 7.62. If I remember correctly argentine mausers were 8mm

My dad has one. It's been sporterized as well. It is cambered in 7.65. The German Mauser seal on his as all have been removed. The model above this one is supposedly the cat's "rear"to have.

I have never shot it but my dad who actually deer hunted only twice to my knowledge said it barely kicked, but he was a guy that survived carrying an Garand in New Guinea.

I have an old 1895 Chilean Mauser in 7mm with the Sporter Stock. This gun was bought at Sears (back in the day) for $36. Great shooting rifle and very very accurate. I shoot the Hornady SST's and it kills deer freezer dead. My only problem is that I can't find a turned down bolt so I can put a scope on it. Iron sights don't work well with these old eyes of mine. 7mm Mauser is a good round for East Tennessee Whitetails. Not the best round but not the worst.

Should you buy it?-Depends on the price and your wants. The 1891 Argentine mausers were chambered in 7.65x54(or x53) depending on the reference. Finding ammo will be an issue unless you are a reloader. The cartridge is in the .300 Savage/.308 lite class so it has plenty of horsepower. The action itself is not as strong or safe as the later 1898 actions. If it has a good bore and matching bolt receiver it is probably worth 150-350. Big range but a lot depends on condition and originality.

I've got the 1895 model in 7mm. It looks like it just came off of the assembly line but it was sporterized. As you said it's hard to find a scope mount or add a scope at all. What I did was have a pistol scope added to the rear leaf sight. It's called a scout scope/scout rifle. 2x7 power. Very fast pointer. At 2x, you can throw that rifle to your shoulder and you're almost instantly on target.

Caliber is 7.65 Argentine, and you can buy factory loads from Norma(they can be pricey though).
