Those should work for a while, but you will probably see some arrows go through. I suspect you will tear up some fletchings shooting into your bales.

The most cost effective product I have found is the Target Bag sold by Third Hand Archery out of KY. It is a VERY heavy duty, self-sealing poly bag with a velcro top. It has a variety of target circles printed on the bag. You stuff it with rags, used clothing/bedding, etc.

They really work well and last several years. They sell for $25 or two for $45.
Thanks, I may look into that.

so it is right by the archery den? Might check that out sometime. do they have 3d targets?

Hay bales was the go to thing back in the day, everyone had bales stacked in the back yard back then, but the bows we shot then didnt have the horse power these newer ones do.

Catman , do you have any old clothes ? If you want to make a small cheap target that will last a while . Do this , get a box , whatever size you want your target to be . Fill the box as tight as you can with clothes . Folded in layers, with the layers from front to back . Pack them in as tight as you can and then duct tape it shut . Draw target dots on a piece of paper and tape it to it and waaalah ! Here is what mine looked like when I made mine . It lasted from December untill a couple weeks ago and I shot it almost every day alot !! And you can pull them with two fingers.

thanks for sharing. I have heard of this method but don't have enough old clothes to use right now. If I ever do I will make a target with them

Check out your local goodwill or thrift store . Sometimes they have clothes that they cannot put out and would love for people to take them away . Also I used a little bit of the egg crate type foam from one of my old mattress cover things . I will be building a bigger " permenant " one of these soon and will let you know how it goes .

that's funny I had the same idea about goodwill. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

Ditto ! I did that 33 years ago when I first started and ruined a lot of arrow fletchings . The only way they stop arrows consistently is to use a bale compressor made from two threaded rods , placed on each side and a 2x12 on the top and bottom of the bales . Drill holes through each end of the 2x12 boards , place a rod through from top to bottom ,place 3 bales in , then tighten the nuts on each rod to compress the bales .
Make sure you do this where you want to shot a the target , because it's too heavy to move .
I'd much rather spend the money on a portable target I can move around and shoot broadheads into though .......
