North Carolina all but treats them as such!! 15/day, electronic callers and unplugged shotguns. Before I moved, we absolutely hammered'em during the september season. That was back when it was 5/day, then it moved to 8/day. The liberal seasons have really put a dent in the rural resident geese populations....So much so, For the first time I can remember, we did'nt even bother with trying to hunt them last year. With the landowner contacts we had and most of friends being farmers, we always had plenty of places to shoot'em. They get smart quick. They know where they will be shot and where there safe.
I say that to say this, even with virtually unrestricted regulations, the urban populations are still as high as they have ever been!!!! The only rural places holding big numbers of residents are horse farms. And 99% of horse freaks will not let you goose hunt, even though, they are proven carriers of various diseases.

If, by chance, one goose had Avian TB or Botulism and they released the flock on a public waterway it could very well spell disaster for other waterfowl and wading birds. Being that the geese were so overpopulated there the chances of disease can be increased tenfold, easily.

I tend to agree with them destroying the geese for this reason.

They should have given them to food for hungry folks.

I worked for an OEM supplier to automotive manufacturers. Ford dinged us with a QR for bird feces on our frames. We called in the USDA to help eradicate the birds. Want to be enlightened? Go to their website and lookup nuisance species.
