Wow spend $30,000 to give the deer "The Pill" or lets some folks shoot the deer and give the meat to food panty's to help feed the hungry. Makes sense to me.

People never cease to amaze me!

First, they have to raise $15K per year, the majority coming from residents. Essentially a new tax. Second they have to tranquilize and tag EVERY female deer in their area. Third this must be repeated FOREVER.

Right now they have a university helping out, but what happens 2-3 years down the road when they are gone? Who is gonna buy the equipment and get certified to handle the drugs needed for this operation? Frankly, I think they have grossly underestimated the cost. The dart guns are expensive, the drugs are expensive and dangerous, and certification to handle them is expensive. Now, lets add in man ours, gas, and wear and tear on vehicles. The price tag is climbing.

Furthermore, I can tell you from experience that these deer will learn to recognize the vehicles, and will learn the effective range of the darts. They catch on really fast, especially when you are trying to catch the same deer over and over! Their catch per unit effort will decline dramatically after just a few nights.

Now, just a little scenario. Their crew of do good volunteers are out at night catching deer, and they lose one dart. Yes it happens. Now they have to explain to the DEA what happened to that drug? In the meantime, in that cute little bedroom community, a child finds the dart, it goes off in their hand, and they are DEAD. They do not need to be injected, some of the drugs can be absorbed through skin or mucous membranes, the darts have a charge that goes off to inject the animal when it hits. If you miss, it may or may not discharge. If someone picks it up and it goes off, drug comes squirting out. Now, they can solve this with added expense if they place radio tracking devices in the dart and buy the receivers for those devices, and learn how to use them.

I doubt they have factored that in.

This little experiment, like all the others that have tried it, will soon become too expensive to continue.

I think a better approach is to put all involved on birth control in an effort to reduce the amount of stupid in the world. \:\)
