Made a hand line with a loop on one end and a #6 bait holder on the other end with a small piece of nightcrawler. Line was about 5 feet long and I was tossing it into a cove by a drain pipe in a local pond to catch bluegill for catfish bait. Well one of the times I was trying to catch bait, I felt weight on the line that started to fight back and I lifted this out of the water -

It's the same bass my buddy caught a few nights ago, characterized by a hole in its lower jaw. This ain't the first one of the same bass we have caught more than once in this pond. But usually they take live bluegill. About 3.5 lbs.

Wasn't till about 2 am, after many missed hits, that I finally hooked into a catfish on the small ugly stik with 6 lb line. The cat weighed a little over 8 lbs. some of these cats give carp a run for their money when it comes to fight.

Fun stuff!

Those size fish are cool to catch in little ponds, because they are basically "King of the Water" around there.

I caught a giant bream out of a pig wallow pond when I was 13 on a kernel of corn under a float. I had been catching 3-5" bream, and then this big fat boy grabbed it. He was 1 lb 3 ounces and just shy of 12 inches long. Pretty cool for a pond you could easily throw a rock across.

Cool. What kind of catfish is that? I'm not great on catfish ID but it almost looks like a flathead.

Since you like to video and fish...you should do a show called "Pond Monsters" akin to the "River Monsters" show. Interview area residents about "monsters" known to inhabit their farm ponds...chasing their livestock and what-not.

Fishing shows are a big draw right now and so are shows about us rednecks. Make a million bucks and be famous the world over.

Yea I guess the channel's have been spawning thats why their heads are swelled up. Catman get you a nice flatty on the end of your line if you like the big fights. They are some nice ones around here for sure. Thats what I've been stuck on for a while. The big cats, blues are good too but flat heads put up a better fight.

Nice fish by the way that one is for sure nice ecspecially for a channel. If you are catching channels that big you're doing good

I have not caught a flathead over 5 lbs. where do you fish for em? always wanted to catch a big one, just not sure where to start and never have put in the time for it.

I just moved here early last year and so far I like old hickory pretty good, I have a few spots that I have done ok at. Also the cumberland river I like too but it seems to be completely hit or miss. We have caught several 20+ pound flatties this year so far. I haven't figured them out as good here but over in east tn, at the chick, watts bar, and tn river it is very good fishing. Plus lots of big blues too.

But anyways it just depends on where you want to go there is some decent fishing for them around here. Here soon they will be getting off the beds and that is when I do best for them. They are fun man for sure. Getting a 45 lb Flathead is the only rush I have got freshwater fishing that compares to deer hunting.

I will be fishing below old hickory this summer. Fishing for everything from skipjack to rockfish and walleye and whatever else bites. If you were fishing for flatheads below the dam, where would you focus?
