I deployed multiple times over to the Middle East before I retired last January, served in different commands doing the things that a Sergeants Major does for a unit. One of the most memorable duties or more of an Honor was the Fallen Hero Ceremony. Sometime during the day or night A call comes in to the Base Operations that a fallen hero will arrive on base. The call goes out to the units to prepare for the ceremony. Since our fallen have priority for aircraft a plane is sent to the base to standby. The honor guards are alerted knowing it could be anytime within the next few hours that they would be needed. As the time draws close the different countries along with the U S personnel assemble at the air field to prepare to assemble and march out to the ramp of the aircraft to await the hero's arrival. As the MRAP vehicle with hero arrives on sight the Sergeant Major brings everyone to attention as the vehicle positions itself on the Tarmac. Color Guard and the Pall Bearers march to the vehicle to receive the Hero and in perfect unison carry the hero between the assembled troops who are at Present Arms (Saluting) while the Hero is carried into the plane. The Bag Pipes playing softly over the PA system and the Chaplin says a prayer for the fallen. It was a touching event that you can never forget seeing Military members from all our coalition partners who came to honor our fallen. As the final command is given for the troops to march off the ramp a somber feeling is in all minds knowing that this is what war is, Soldiers honoring Soldiers with out regard to nationality. Warriors honoring another who has made the supreme sacrifice. Sometimes these events honor multiple heros that have fallen, covering all the branches of our services, men and women, army, marines, air force and navy. Let us not forget the fallen from any war who gave so that we might live in freedom.

I posted this in part on another thread but wanted ya'll to know of the honors that our service personnel give to our fallen comrades before they return to their love ones. I will never forget what price they paid for my freedom.

I've been told one must be there to even begin to grasp the significance of these moments, but I hope you don't mind my posting these videos which attempt to convey what you're speaking of here.

Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.
