Tilapia in ponds and lakes are better tasting than most other gamefish in the same waters!! I have friends that shoot a lot while bowfishing in Fla and NC. Absolutely nothing wrong with'em taste wise. I can fry up a mess of crappie, bluegills and tilapia and 95% of people can't tell the difference.

I refuse to buy it at the store because a lot of it comes from Vietnamese farm ponds, where they build chicken coops above the ponds to feed the fish. It's then sold as "catfish" in places.

No thanks.

some neighborhood ponds here have tilapia stocked every year for algae control. I may try to sneak a couple out from one of those ponds if I feel there aren't too many backyards worth of weed and bug killer runoff going into the pond. Just to see how they taste when eating algae instead of chicken scat or whatever they are fed in the fish farms.

That's an interesting comment. I'm getting into aquaponics and plan on raising tilapia. Do you think the food these fish are fed are the issue?

I wouldn't feed a dying goat tilapia....but that's just me.

I used to get tilapia from time to time......until I saw on a program a few weeks ago the conditions at these tilapia farms. It was a pretty bad scene, I will ever eat tilapia again.

Better make sure you avoid any programs on chicken and pig farming, too, or your dining choices are going to drop sharply.
