I was in the garden on Friday and everything was hunky dorey, my mom goes back on Saturday to lay down some newspaper and bam, this baby had kicked the bucket in less than 24 hours.

What would cause a plant to look & die this fast, like this:

When ALL my others look like this:

I dont have a garden this year, but my squash and zuchini plants were the first to go every year. I had squash bugs on them. No matter how much sevin dust I put on them.. how many i picked off.. it was inevitable for me. They would devour my plants and quickly.

Do you have them?

I have not seen/noticed any bugs like that on mine. I'm going to double check now of course, but again I have 11 other hills that are big and beautiful \:\) . I don't use pesticides either.

Maybe a cut worm in the stem just at the base of the plant. It does not sound like squash bush if it just happened overnight. As far as squash bugs go, you have stop the first invasion. Kill all the adults and destroy any egg clusters you find. This is a daily process, but can be done, I started using liquid eight from the co-op to spray over the top, under the leaves, and on the ground around the plants. So far no bugs.
Good luck and God Bless, Steve

Look for tiny holes where the stem goes into the ground.I'll bet you have squash borers. A moth lays it's eggs at the base of the plant, When the eggs hatch small worms bore a hole to gain entrance to the stem. They feed on the soft tissue in the stem.
Take a very sharp small blade and cut a slit in the stem till you find the worm,Remove the worm and cover the stem with dirt. IT will grow new roots along the damaged section.

I'm trying row covers to protect mine this year,I used a weed torch to try and toast any cocoons in the ground from last year,

Yep, squash vine borers. When you see adults, you need to spray insecticide on the stems regularly.

I had one die on me. it had some squash bugs, but i sprayed and killed all the egg clusters. It still died.
