Rare bird last seen in Britain 22 years ago reappears - only to be killed by wind turbine in front of a horrified crowd of birdwatchers

There had been only eight recorded sightings of the white-throated needletail in the UK since 1846. So when one popped up again on British shores this week, twitchers were understandably excited.

A group of 40 enthusiasts dashed to the Hebrides to catch a glimpse of the brown, black and blue bird, which breeds in Asia and winters in Australasia.

But instead of being treated to a wildlife spectacle they were left with a horror show when it flew into a wind turbine and was killed.

Wow!

Good thing this bird wasn't killed by an oil company! That would have been tragic!

Wonder how this will play out in the UK?
Here in America, environmentalists seem to have little problem with all the endangered birds being killed by windmills, and even the EPA refuses to fine them (but they are very quick to fine an oil company for a single sparrow.)

What if it had flew into a pile of coal?

I thought the needletail was in the limo with the Kenyan. \:D

A few points of correction. This is not a rare bird. In fact it is a common bird in its normal range. The rare occurance in Britain occurs when one gets lost or blown way off course. It would be like seeing a raven in west tennessee. Yes that bird is extremely rare, there, but not in its native range. The population of these birds was not devastated by this death that probably would have occurred anyway since this bird was on the opposite side of the continent totally out of its native range.

A prime example of propaganda used by anyone that is looking for any reason to oppose alternative energy sources.

That may be in this case, and your point well taken.

I really don't think most people are opposed to seeking alternative energy sources, and I'm all for it myself. But some of us are opposed to the crony capitalism coming out of Washington (where elite politicians use OUR money to enrich their political allies), and federal laws being selectively enforced based on politics, i.e. for an example an oil company being heavily fined for killing a bird, while a windmill company kills them by the hundreds with impunity.

My issue is more with the crony capitalism and double-standards, as I'm all for pursuing alternative energy sources.

It is awesome that the libs are getting a little taste of their own medicine.

EVERYTHING is politicized these days. If a conservative farts in public its front page news and a condemnation of their policies.

For far too long the left has been exempt from an honest debate or scrutiny about their policies and more importantly the RESULTS of those policies.

Im all for finding alternative energy sources BUT they have to be effective, affordable, and usable. Mugging the US citizen to funnel vast wealth to your political allies who then bankrupt the company and run off with the money is nothing more than Armed robbery on a grand scale.

Federal subsidies for private companies needs to end. The bank account is empty, the house is trashed and the party is over. Time for the grown ups to cancel the credit card and take control of the check book.

Diehard makes a very good point. But I really don't see the article as lying or propaganda. The bird was rare, in Britain. Good chance it would've died anyway. I get it.

It'd be similar to seeing a penguin etc. in the Cherokee NF. Rare to us and not in it's natural habitat. It would've died anyway, perhaps.

Thousands of eagles die here in the states from alternative energy sources with no pitchforks raised. Enviro's are selective in their condemnation. That's what I'll walk away with from this thread.
