To be honest I think both are good scopes. Which models are you looking at?

The vx-1 leupolds are not as clear as their other scopes. Although leupold makes exceptionally good quality scopes, the vx-1 line is their budget entry model and, in my opinion, is inferior. If that was my only choice of a leupold scope, i would pass on it in favor of the nikon.
Ive owned two vx-1's and seven vx-2's, and for the small bump up in cost you get 20 times the quality with the vx-2's.
The vx-1 is ok in broad daylight, but the optics cloud up in dusk and dawn light conditions, which is exactly when you need clarity and light gathering capability in your scope.
I would recomend the leupold vx-2 scopes as an excellent scope that you will never have to upgrade, and will hold zero year after year.

Check out Hawke Optics. Great glass at very good prices. Won't go into the tech part but I know their scopes will hold up to things no other standard scope on the market will.
