I planted a few more plum trees in late February. One of my better Santa Rosa Plum trees never budded or sprouted leaves. I scraped the bark and found a green healthy looking layer of tissue. I called the nursery, who told me their stock hadn't grown leaves either. The guy stated the trees were dug at the wrong time, but they would come back.

Question: can I cut the tree down to about a 12" stub and help it regrow?

I did the same trick with a 5" DBH persimmon & Bartlett Pear last year. The persimmon showed no signs of life when trimmed, but is now sending out new limbs and leaves. The pear tree quickly grew new limbs and is now over 5' tall.

Here's a photo of the Santa Rosa Plum:

That wouldn't be my first cut. I'd chop the branches way back and see if there is any evidence of life there. Maybe try to take as much as 2ft off; just my opinion.

I would cut about 1/3 off all the branches.

We had a Santa Rosa for several seasons. It was so prolific it would nearly break it's limbs off with fruit. About the 4th or 5th year, when Spring came around, one limb didn't bud. Within about a month, the entire tree was dead. No clue what happened, but it was a real loss.

Ouch, that would be frustrating. My tree still has a few green limbs, but no leaves. I trimmed off the dead wood and hope to see improvement soon. If not, I'll start over with another tree in the fall / winter.

Tree update... more and more limbs are dying. I cut the tree back to a 14" leader on the main truck. I expect to loose this one.

Wonder if it isn't the same thing that ate mine up. Unfortunately, I never got that one diagnosed. Thinking I'd get it far from my other plum trees fast, though.
