This post would be better with a picture but we did about a 60 foot long hill and planted 50+ sweet potato plants. They were hanging tough for several weeks producing more and more foliage. This was, by the way, the only thing we planted that wasn't fenced in inside the main garden. Well, about a week ago my mom picked a leaf and started eating it. To that I said, "What the heck are you doing?" She said, "They're sweet". And I immediately thought, this could be bad. Sure enough it looks like you took a lawn mower over them and all they left were their tracks in the dirt. Unless it is just a coincidence I'm saying it was the deer. There are a few leaves left here and there so my brother and I are going to try to fence it in today and see if any pull out of it.

I hear ya. If they weren't so labor intensive, planting each single plant one at a time, I believe I would say I found my new food plot crop.

Yep deer love them. Even the ornamental ones planted in flower beds. Now that they have found them it'll be hard to keep em out. A very tall fence or cages might help let them get some growth.Might be to late now but I've seen them surrounded by Lady Finger peas. The peas were planted for the deer. They would leave most the sweet potatoes alone.

Yeah I fenced them in with just 3ft tall chicken wire of all things and I guess since they are planted in 1 long 50ft row I was able to make it work effectively and the sweets are making a comeback.

We had the same thing happen a few years back. All of a sudden our sweet potatoes were gone over just a few nights.
