Thanks BSK, I understand your point exactly. Here is an example of one of my heavy cut areas in the heart of my land. This cut consists of 12 acres with a mostly southern sloping hill. There is a 1/2 acre feeding plot in the center. The goal is to make this area a thick sanctuary for the deer.

Do you think 12 acres is too small for a sanctuary?

Nope. 12 acres is not too small for a sanctuary. On clients' properties, I design multiple sanctuaries scattered across their properties, and I feel 3-5 acres each is best for hunting purposes. Large sanctuaries work great biologically, but hunting around the edges of large sanctuaries can be very difficult (too many routes in and out to cover).

TSI indeed...

we are removing elm, cedar, gum, beech, ironwood, and pines from the select cut areas. The remaining trees are mostly oaks with a few scattered poplar, dogwood, persimmon, green ash, and some hickory. These trees should benefit from less competition within the timber stand.

The heavily cut / cleared area is another aspect of the overall plan to improve natural deer food sources, increase cover, and create a sanctuary in the middle of my land.

Make you some room for some more trees. I have found a couple of new ones that produce at a young age. One at a very young age. I'll try to save you some seed. Where on the map are the Chestnuts going?

That sounds great.... I've had a great time growing these Dunstan's from seed. I have some at 5' and branching out at the top! I have around 30 trees alive, which isn't bad as I only lost three that sprouted. One of these developed a great root system, just never sent up vertical growth. It is still in the rootmaker 3 gal pot. The other two suffered died when I went out of town for work. My wife didn't give them enough "daily" love. LOL.

I'm planting 10 in the southern opening near the power line, 20 in the field north of the heavy clearing area with red banded (oaks) trees. I could use a few more for sure. I would actually rather plant the chestnuts instead of the pines down near the road. I could do a smaller strip of pines for edge screening, then plan the chestnuts. This area has great, well-drained soil, but doesn't dry out during droughts.

Where are you getting your seed? I would love to learn how to raise from seed.

Cheers to those who have confirmed deer tolerance for logging operations. If anything, we seem to have more daylight deer activity.

Loggers are finishing up there final cutting this week. A quick clean up process and they'll be on their way. I am pretty anxious to see them go. As they finish a track, I've been working clean up areas, plots, etc. I want to quickly finalize my hunting prep work and allow the area to calm.

The only negative during this effort came from some damage to white oaks that we were trying to protect. Oh well, one should expect some damage from logging.
