I just got a chronograph. Took it out and shot several rounds. I understand what the mean is. I understand extreme spread. I'm vague on standard deviation tho. And what do my numbers really tell me. What is an acceptable extreme spread and what is an acceptable SD

Standard deviation is how much it differs from the mean. If you drew dots for the speeds the bullets went, then drew a curve to connect the dots, the SD would be the distance left or right from the middle of the curve. This represents how much slower or faster than the mean (average speed).

Here are the numbers I have. I'm shooting a 308, 165 sgk over 44.6 varget. Cci primers. Win brass

Extreme spread was 156
High was 2841. Low was 2685

Mean was 2770

I punched in my velocities that I recorded into an online calculator. Standard deviation was 53.627

My extreme spread seems awful big. SD seems high but these numbers are new to me and I don't know how to verify the online calculator. I found it odd that the first 7 rounds were between 2685-2777. Last 4 were 2815-2841.
