Maybe I just have a bad memory but is there not normally just one week between the statewide youth hunt and ML opener? I noticed there were two this year.

Yep, it's all a result of the way the calendar falls this year and next. Bow hunters will get to hunt the first weekend in November this year (2nd & 3rd) exclusively as well as next year, unlike the last several where the 5th bow only hunting weekend fell right before juvenile (last weekend in October), like it does most years.

I absolutely DESPISE those years (like this year) where MZ starts so late. In my area, we miss the chance to hunt with a firearm during the best time of the year (cruising phase of the rut).

MZ needs to open Nov. 1!!!

but looks at the other side of the coin. those prime days spent with the muzzleloader will be taking away prime days that could be spent with a CENTERFIRE.

Good point redblood. As I've said many times, either everybody should get to hunt the prime time with their weapon of choice, or nobody should get to hunt the prime time.

what if prime time is the first week of bow season when the bucks are still on their summer patterns. Gun hunt?

Prime days with a muzzleloader and fewer hunters on public land or prime days with a centerfire and more hunters on public land. Given those two choices, I'll take muzzleloader!

Either everybody hunts or nobody hunts. That prevents all the bickering between weapon preferences/seasons.

Although, that said, I wouldn't place the last part of summer travel patterns as "prime time." 2nd best time, yes, but not the very best time. I would put the cruising phase of the rut (just before breeding starts) as the #1 prime time. In some parts of the state, that falls during gun season. But in parts of Middle and North-central TN, that prime time can fall in MZ or even before MZ.

Wouldn't the amount of pressure a piece of property receives dictate prime time. Prime time to me is before the shooting starts not because I dislike gin hunting, I just like to see a few deer that aren't nervous and looking up in every tree

Hunting pressure certainly plays a role, but not as important of a role as the rut. The phase of the rut is definitely the most powerful player in daylight deer movement, especially the daylight movement of the most sought-after older bucks.

im not against it. I think the seasons are just fine. as I have said before the only thing I would like to see them change is to open the season earlier so we have a legit chance at a velvet buck. but all and all I think its just fine and is pretty fair. if you don't like it go to another state or don't hunt. that just me though. personally I think people that hunt the muzzle loading season will be hitting the rut about right at least that seems to be around the dates that it starts to really get going at our farms for most years.

The way the opening of rifle season is set (Saturday before Thanksgiving), and the way MZ opener is set (2 weeks before the gun opener), there are only 7 possible calendar days gun can open, and only 7 possible calendar days MZ can open.

The only possible days gun can open are Nov. 17-23. Subsequently, the only calendar days MZ can open are Nov. 3-9.

This year, due to the arrangement of the calendar, the dates are the latest both season openers can possibly be (Nov. 9 and Nov. 23).

Worst possible scenario for my hunting.

But I'll still be out there...

This year is the perfect scenario for someone who might be planning to bow hunt the first week of November in Kansas. They can get back to Tennessee before the muzzleloaders start going off. Not that I know anyone in that situation... ;\)
