1 cup beer
1 cup apple cider
1 cup cider vinegar
1 cup coffee
1 cup beef or chicken stock
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons Tabasco sauce
2 teaspoons kosher or sea salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 cups of tomato sauce
1 to 2 cups your favorite mild or hot salsa(hot if you want the kick)
Kosher or sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Place all ingredients in a bowl and whisk to mix. Taste for seasoning, adding more salt, if necessary. Reduce on the stovetop until you get the desired thickness.

One of my favorites that you won't see around here and has that sweet/tangy taste your looking for:

1 Cup- Yellow Mustard
1/4 Cup- Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup- Sugar
3/4 Cup- Apple Cider Vinegar
1/2 Cup- Water
1/4 Tsp- Cayenne powder
1 Tsp- Both Salt and Pepper
2 Tsp- Onion Powder
2 Tsp- Garlic Powder
2 Tsp- Dried Mustard Powder
1 TBS- Chili Powder

Whisk this all together then simmer 20-30 minutes until it gets a nice consistency.
(I suggest mixing this up a week or so before your bbq for best results, it gets better with time.)
I eat this on EVERYTHING pulled pork, chicken, grilled tenderloin, had it on hot dogs and hamburgers today.

my favorite is simple. take the juice/faqt off the porkshoulder, add some texas pete and a touch of vinegar and whisk. it is a light red, thin sauce. i dont like the thick sweet and pasty stuff

look up some that have balsamic vinegar in it,1 cup of that & a cup of brown sugar a cup of ketchup some chiploti powder simmer for 30 minutes, hard to beat for some thing different, it may take a little more vinegar to get it thin & work it down about 1/3 of what you started with

you can't really taste the ketchup in mine either. there is a lot more vinegar than ketchup in mine. It is a thin sauce that the meat will soak up. It's not a thick lay on top of the meat sauce.
