As I've mentioned several times, I suffered from this tick-caused allergy for many years. Although, after staying away from beef for almost 20 years, the allergy appears to be virtually gone.

One of the researchers mentioned in the article states there may be a genetic susceptibility factor in play, as he has seen the allergic reaction run in families. That's definitely the case in my family as now three of my five siblings suffer symptoms of it, two of them very severely.

That is great news Brian. By that, do you mean you can now eat meat/venison?

wow, had no idea. I'm glad to hear you are over it now Bsk. So how did you find out you weren't allergic to it anymore? Allergies are weird like that, they can come and go, sometimes appearing out of the blue for no reason.

Wow. So just dependent on eating red meat, and the fat therein? What about lean deer meat? Do you have, or did you have, the symptoms from eating venison?

Thought it was kinda funny when the Dr(in the article) said he awoke at 3 a.m. in London I believe it was, after eating lamb the eve before with the symptoms...he said he just went back to bed, glad that he had another case to report on.

I never had a problem with venison. I just couldn't eat beef or some pork products. It appears to have a lot to do with fat content. Beef and pork containing a lot of fat were the biggest problem, especially fast food beef products or anything heavily processed (fat usually added).

But now I eat anything I want. I suspect that has to do with how long I avoided beef and the fact I really can't tell you the last time I was bitten by a tick. I don't go into the woods unless my clothes are soaked in Permethrin and I haven't had a tick bite in years.

For most people, it is a reaction to beef and pork fat (with reactions to beef fat being by far the most common).

I did not and most people with this tick-caused allergy have no reaction to venison as long as people don't mix beef fat into their venison. We remove all fat from our venison when processing and add no fat to our ground venison.

BSK,

Thats interesting, never knew about that particular allergy. My sister was allergic to many things as a child but not this particular allergy & none of the things could be in the house as her throat would swell up & couldnt breathe. we went without alot of things as a kid.

BSK Over your pm limit.

thanks Doug

The key to realizing you have this allergy is the 4-6 hour delay time from eating meat until the reaction. All other food-based allergies produce an almost instantaneous reaction.
