Anybody looking for the best bang for the $$ needs to buy the dlc covert black 60 game camera! They are Great quality at a very good price!! Custom1enterprises is where I bought mine from and Chuck is a great guy to deal with. My search for a great quality camera with unmatched battery life is finally over! $139.00 shipped is what these cameras go for, which is a steal!

The 2012 version of the Black 60 is $139.99 but the 2013 version is $206.99. I wonder what the difference is?

I bought the 2012 version from custom1 a few weeks ago. Liked it so much I got another. The difference to my understanding is bigger memory capacity on sd cards and sound in the video mode. Also video is in HD for 2013.

It's common to get over 27,000 pictures off one set of batteries!

I think the Covert Black 60 is one of the top black-flash cameras in the market, but I placed the 2012 versions I reviewed last year 3rd or 4th on my preference list due to lower-quality night pics compared to some other brands. I look forward to seeing results from their 2013 models.

Bryan,
What is the cost of the cameras that took better night pictures than the covert black 60?

I have used the Covert Black 60 for the past year and absolutely love it! The only difference between the 2012 and 2013 models is that the 2013 has HD video with sound, while the 2012 has regular video with no sound. If you are not interested in video there is no reason to pay more money for the 2013 model.

Also consider the 2013 Covert MP6 Black. It is a smaller version of the Black 60, having 40 LED's instead of 60. I caught them on sale at Wing Supply a few weeks back for $119.99.

Both the Bushnell TrophyCam and the Uway VH200B took better night pictures and both cost around $200.

Although I've had problems with other Uway cameras (mainly the NT50Bs), I was extremely pleased with the VH200Bs I used last year. Not a flaw from any of them. I also have one TrophyCam and like it very much, although I don't think it is true black-flash (I can see a glow from it).

Any idea how much less night illumination you get with only 40 LEDs instead of 60?

W. Seay,

Although I've never used one, the test pictures I've seen from the new 2013 Primos TruthCam Supercharged Blackout (around $200) are truly spectacular, as for clarity and illumination distance. They really blow away any other black-flash cam. Now the question is, do you trust Primos cams?

Well, you're a better man than I.
After the ongoing problems I had with the Uway NT50Bs, my purchases following all the great reviews they had on Chasingame, no way would I ever again consider ANY Uway.

I feel about Uway exactly like you (and I both) feel about Cuddeback: Overpriced junk. No way would I take another chance with either.

But I am favorably impressed with what I'm hearing about the DLC Covert cams. Just a little gun shy having heard similar about so many others, most of which never work as advertised, and commonly become useless about the time their warranties expire.

The MP6 Black has a flash range of 45 ft., the Black 60 has a flash range of 60 ft. While the Black 60 produces noticeably brighter photos, the MP6 Black is certainly adequate for most situations.

As mentioned earlier, a few nighttime photos from both models are blurry or out of focus. The slower shutter speed needed to gather enough light causes this. I have yet to see any black flash or infrared cameras that did not produce at least some blurry night photos. By setting the camera in burst mode, I am able to get at least some of the photos clearly focused.

One of the things that impressed me about the Covert is I had several pics (2-3) of song birds flying across the frame. This was with single pic setting and no delay between pics. To me that is one fast trigger!!

I have noticed it does have a sensor area wider than the camera which leads to some empty frames but with its battery life I haven't worried about it.

I have noticed the same thing. Numerous times I have had deer "hang up" a few feet outside of the camera viewing area while the sensor caused the camera to fire away. Occasionally, a nose, foot, or tail would show up in the outer edge of the photo. The way I have gotten around it is to put black electrical tape on both sides of the PIR sensor to narrow the sensing area. This causes the subject to be closer to the center of the frame before taking a photo.

Wes,

So many of these Chinese-made cameras have problems either right out of the factory or soon after deployment that I'm really hesitant to recommend any brand anymore. Every brand has problems with reliability.

For me, it's now about which units have the best features at the best price, but knowing you're going to have some bad units from time to time.

Thanks for the info on illumination distance. For salt licks, feeders, bait piles, or scrapes, I think you're right about 45-foot illumination distances being good enough. But at times, I like to point cameras across narrow food plots, and that's when extra illumination is helpful (of course, that's also where a flash extender can be so useful).

I agree that ALL black-flash cams suffer from motion blur, due to the longer exposure times required for black-flash. Yet some black-flash cams take very blurry pictures, in that everything in the picture is "fuzzy." I want the crispest pictures I can get, even though I know I will still experience some motion blur on moving deer.

Don't worry about the warranty with DLC. Give them a call and they will take care of you if one of their cameras fail.

It will if applied correctly. I always spray my clothes the night before and let them hang dry overnight to ensure the permethrin creates a good bond with the fibers. If this is not an option, at least try to let it dry before hitting the woods. I think you will be pleased. \:\)

Agreed. Although I've always been a fan of Made in USA Reconyx cameras, they've priced themselves right out of the market. I noticed that for 2013 Reconyx has come out with a line of cameras that look and perform just like most of the Chinese cameras. Yet they are asking $600 for them! They've got to be kidding...

DLC makes a decent camera for Made in China

As much as I would like to buy "Made in USA" cameras, I don't think I could afford to do that and still cover as many different areas as I want to cover. It is what it is...

Yep, it's a bit difficult to strap $600 to a tree and walk away. My personal limit is more like $100. I had a $150 camera stolen 5 or 6 years ago and I decided at that point that I was going as cheap as possible. I don't really care to get pictures that are magazine cover quality - I just want to see what the deer looks like. \:\)

Personally, I need two features that add cost: true black-flash, and clear day/night images for identifying individual bucks by what can be fairly subtle antler shape differences. For those two features I'll spend upwards of $250, but in the last year I've been finding camera with those features in the $170-200 range.

The pony express (mail) dropped off a package with a new Black 60 in it this morning. The price on 2012 model was just too good to pass up - I don't need HD and sound on videos anyway and that was the main updates to the 2013 cameras. I have had 2 Black 60's for over a year that have been great so far, and you can't beat the battery life on them. I run rechargables in mine and it is great just changing out the SD cards when I check them and not have to swap batteries but 3 times a year. The only drawback to them is that night pictures are not all that great (common on black flash cams).
