Anyone here ever put a whole deer on the grill or outdoor pig roaster?I thought it sounded fun.I guess you would do it like a goat?

It's tricky to do it well, but it can be done. If you we're going to do a spit, I would tie the legs up next to the body. Also, a yearling deer is what you want for this. A mature deer will be especially difficult because of the cooking time difference on different muscles. Wouldn't hurt to put some fatback in the cavity and brush a light coating of it across the body once it melts.

I saw them do it on a TV show once. They wrapped the whole thing up and put it in a pit of coals and covered it.

I don't recall any of the details of how they seasoned it, but it looked pretty interesting.

It would definitely be something that I'd only do in the company of other hunters, because getting cuts of meat out of a hot pile of deer would be a chore I'd only want to do for myself (I can just picture my wife's family staring blankly with plates in their hands).

Yeah, its definitely a "everybody get a knife and stand around the table" type of dinner.

We did it once when a kid shot a 25-30 pound spotted fawn. ..well kinda whole, it was quartered like a squirrel or rabbit but the whole deer fit on the grill.

I saw a thing a few years ago on TV (Andrew Zimmern perhaps?) where he visited somewhere in BFE West Virginia. They buried a young doe in the ground overnight. You may want to look up the episode for some guidelines.
