I just flipped past the Sportsman Channel and there is a show on called "Outlanders." episode is called "Fallen Timber and Whitetails: a Tennessee Whitetail Hunt." The show features a Nashville family (father and 2 sons) hunting on a lease (no land owner exemption) and they are hunting during rifle season without orange hats. None of them wear orange hats during the entire episode. They are wearing vests.
They also give terrible grilling advice during the cooking segment.

NO worse than Knight and Hale a few years ago dumping out a big 'ol bucket of C'Mere Deer as they were hunting Tennessee as they stated....nothing came of it that I heard of.

That bad grilling advice is almost worse that the blaze orange violation...and just before Memorial Day. While it's still fresh in people's minds, there's no telling how many gorgeous steaks will be ruined this weekend.

Just plain irresponsible.

I know, right? I probably would have let them slide if they had not dispersed improper grilling techniques to the general public. \:o

I didn't know TN had a blaze orange hat requirement? If the vest is 500 sq. in. is that sufficient?

Hunters must wear on the upper portion of their body and head a minimum of 500-square inches of daylight fluorescent orange (blaze orange), visible front and back, while hunting big game except on archery-only and turkey hunts. (A hat and vest fulfills requirements.) Blaze orange camo is legal if it contains 500 square inches of fluorescent orange. In those areas where the archery-only deer season dates overlap with another big game gun season (i. e. bear or boar), archers are required to wear 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange (TCA-70-4-124).

The way I read it, it says and head, not or. So, that should mean, I would believe, that it has to be on the head as well, and have a total of 500 sq in.

MUP is correct...it has to be a total of 500 sq in and the head must be covered as well. A buddy of mine, whom I've been on for years about not wearing a blaze hat and relying solely on his vest, finally got checked by a GW and around $150 or so out of his pocket later now always wears his blaze hat.

This is a much better wording that says the same thing, IMO.

http://ihea-usa.org/hunting-and-shooting/requirements/hunter-orange-requirements

Tennessee

All big game hunters with firearms must wear at least 500 square inches of Hunter Orange on a head covering and an outer garment above the waist, visible front and back.

Mississippi

All deer hunters during any gun season for deer must wear in full view at least 500 square inches of solid, unbroken Hunter Orange visible from all sides.

I honestly didn't know the hat was required. I've been on two TN leases where it was vests only for the most part. I've hunted in IL with a hat and MS where hats are not required.

Good post may have saved me (and others) some money next season.
