I am rigging my 30-30 up for my son to take on the juvenile this year. I am going to put a youth stock on it and let him shoot managed recoil loads. I really want him to kill his first deer with the same gun that I did and let the tradition be passed down.

I am probably going to put a red dot on it for him. I expect the shots to be close and think that it will be easier for him to find the target in a red dot scope versus a regular powered scope. He has shot a 223 with a red dot with good results.

Can anyone recommend a good one that would go on a 30-30 and not break the bank? I would also like to have one that I can use my same mounts that I have on it now.

What mounts are on it now? Should be able to find one that will mount to a Weaver style base fairly easily...

The ones I have came with their own mounts.. but I wouldnt recommend one for anyone.. to make a long story short, I put one on a rifle for my daughter .. target practice was great, but opening morning.. a deer steps out not far from us.. I tell her to shoot.. she never does..i keep telling her to shoot..she never does.. finally the deer walked off.. she said she couldnt see the dot..I grabbed the gun.. sure enough.. the sun was coming up behind us and the dot was completely missing no matter the power setting.. I jerked that crap off and put on a fixed 4 power scope and she got one that afternoon...

...or just use the open sights, if you plan on close contact shooting. ;\) My 9yr old daughter prefers open sights, so she says. \:\)

No, I actually took them off to put a scope mounted tight to the barrel a few years ago. I shouldn't have did it this way, but let's just say that they can't be put back on. \:\) He might be okay with the scope that is on it set on "3" but still leaning towards a red dot where eye relief shouldn't be as much of an issue.

TN Larry,
Go to Optics Planet webb. The best deals on all types of scopes. I suggest the AimPoint 9000SC Red Dot. This is one rugged scope with loooooooong battery life. The $$$ have come down a long way in the past 5 years, have two on large bore handguns. Eye relief is no issue and very bright (adjustable) dot. They come with rings as well. Good luck.
