I never meant to imply that predation was "the" most significant factor in turkey numbers. In the case of Maury County, I suspect all the favorable factors have aligned better over the past few years, including the possibility that increased predation (for whatever reasons) is not as much an issue as in many other counties.

But usually with an increase in prey population, an increase in predator population follows, really knocking back the number of prey, then the predator population falls back (sometimes starves), then the prey population grows again ---- just a natural cycle between prey & predators. Again, this is just one factor effecting ongoing turkey populations.

Hey, an increase in rabbits could temporarily decrease predation on turkeys, simultaneously increasing young predator survival rates, which then causes much greater predation on turkeys a year or two later when all the dumb rabbits have been eaten. \:D

Imo it will go up the next couple of years as more and more hunters head this way then it will fall off like all the other counties have. I seen double the hunters here than last year and it seems hunters seem to increase every year and i think the amount of turkeys will dwindle off

Could habitat changes be the reason for the decline in some areas and increase in numbers in others? Now, for you southern county hunters: Is it smaller flocks you're seeing or have the turkeys left your areas and moved down he road?

#1 our habitat hasn't changed and would be primo turkey habitat

#2 we use to see fall flocks from 4 to 100 birds every day, spring time was like other counties there were strutters in every single field. Now you could drive from sun up to sun down all over the southern half of the county for days and you wouldn't see a bird

The last 2 years here in Hardeman County you'd be hard pressed to see many if any turkeys in the fields. And compared to the 5-10 years prior, that is very unusual. That in itself was an indication to me that something was detrimentally happening to our turkey population.

I am concerned that Maury will take a beating from hunters comin in because they hear the hunting is good. But I had opposite experience this spring, I saw fewer hunters than last two years.

The article that I read states that bad weather on the weekends probable was the reason many hunters did not fill their tags and harvest numbers were not higher.
