Has anyone hunted up there before? I may get access to a 500 acre farm, and just wanted to gather some information about area.

You ever watched Justified?

Never been there but I hear it is rough country (topography speaking). Tough deer hunting (population speaking)...but some good uns.

There's a documentary called Harlan County U.S.A. that's about the mining strike that took place in the early 70s. You need to watch it so you'll know what kind of people you'll be hunting with. I watched it on the Sundance channel I think.

Here's the trailer for it on Youtube. It's well worth a watch if you can find it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCiVMngILEI

So y'all believe everything you see on tv? Listen, I lived and worked in Harlan county for 13 months. The deer population isn't huge. But there are some stud bucks there for sure. You just have to find them. The terrain is steep and rough. Your best chance at seeing a deer is up on the strip jobs where there's some flat land and food. I've been on a few where u could see well beyond 500-600 yds. As for the people, I made several good friends there and they are fine folks. Granted, there are some rough ones there too.

I have hunted Harlan. It is a very poor area with a large drug problem. The hunting was not bad but not great either. Lots of public land in the area. Turkey hunting was better than deer hunting. Most of area straight up and down.

Thanks for the input guys, I guess I will be carrying the entire time then. Are there any differences between the states about carrying a concealed weapon during hunting season? The area I have access to used to be mined but not anymore. Is that what you are referring to climb_higher?

Yep that's what I was referring to. You can carry concealed during all of KY seasons including archery. Of course, if its a WMA or federal land you'll want to check their regs

It is private land, so I should be fine. Thanks!

Ive got family there and hunt it a few times a year, I never expect to see many deer but have seen some old mountain that the locals have killed. More land than you could ever hunt. Up ther if its not posted more than likely you can hunt it.
